Mission Statement

The Door County Golf Association is a non-profit service organization which conducts golf related events to raise funds which will be donated back to the community as scholarships, to support junior golf, and to promote the growth of golf within Door County. This is accomplished by our hard working volunteers, board of directors, and with the support of our many generous sponsors.

History

The first Cherryland Open was held September 6 & 7, 1956, at the Alpine Resort Golf Course in Egg Harbor, Door County, Wisconsin. The 15 professionals and 79 amateurs played a 36-hole medal match for $1,000 in prizes. The entry fee was $7.50.

Gordon Watson, President of the Wisconsin PGA, working with George Resch & Associates, pointed out that after Labor Day the tourist industry in Door County had a drastic drop and the busiest part of the golf season ended for most Wisconsin professionals. Resch said that a number of hotels which usually close after Labor Day weekend would remain open until after the tournament. The Peninsula Players scheduled a repeat performance of "No Time for Sergeants" during the tournament week, and at the Rock "The Dixieland Jazz Orchestra," under the direction of Rank Sokol, held over. Another feature included Karen Goodman, the 1958 Cherry Blossom Queen, and her Court.

Many players competed in the inaugural Door County Cherryland Open at the Alpine Resort Golf Course. The professional winner was Tommy Veech from Milwaukee who fired 71 & 68 for a total of 139. First prize was $250. Other top finishers among the professionals were Manuel De LaTorre, Milwaukee, 140; Lou Warobich, Manitowoc, 141; and Mike Bencriscutto, Racine, 141. There was a 3-way tie for Amateur Winner between Jackie Allen, Madison; Chuck Steeno, Green Bay; and Bob Thomas, Milwaukee -- all shooting 140 over the two day tournament. Jackie Allen won the Amateur medalist on the second hole of the sudden death playoff.

Bill Mieler, of Sturgeon Bay, shot 146. Bill played with Bobby Brue on the second day of the tournament. Bobby Brue played on the PGA tour and now plays on the Senior PGA tour.
